The Silver Spoon: Vintage Spoon Ring

  • Course
  • 70 Lessons

Learn metalsmithing in this fun, project oriented workshop.

Why a project? Because this is not your average "Metalsmithing 101" class! From my teaching experience I know that students, especially beginners, want to complete something they can walk away with. The classic spoon ring is perfect for the beginner metalsmith. With the enormous variety of gorgeous vintage, and new, sterling patterns, you'll make a beautiful and unique piece. I'll show you how to make the basic, iconic spoon ring, as well as how to add bezel set stones for an elevated take on a classic. This class is a jumping off point to start your metalsmithing practice, as well as get you thinking creatively.

This course is a great place for the absolute beginner to take up the art of metalsmithing. I know what it's like starting out when you don't know what tools to get, what materials are best, or what techniques to use. I'll familiarize you with basic metalsmithing; the terms, the tools, and the beginning techniques. All work will be done using a very student-friendly butane torch.

These spoon rings are a great introductory project, with enough interest for a more advanced student. With a little practice, and ingenuity, the options for different styles are endless!

Skill Level: beginner and up

The Silver Spoon

Originally from Oregon, with a long stop in Texas, I now live in the wild west of Wyoming where my husband was born and raised. Wyoming has always been home to me and we're lucky to have an amazing, old farmhouse built in 1900, that sits at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. We are host to deer, pheasant, wild turkeys, bald eagles, great horned owls, moose, osprey and even a bear in our yard. This is the setting for Owl Creek Studio, and the inspiration for much of my work.

Through years of practice in metalsmithing and jewelry making techniques I've developed a unique style of my own. I traveled the country, for years, to feed my love of teaching and discovered a true passion for sharing my knowledge of technique and design. I was one of the first instructors to offer online jewelry making classes and am proud to offer excellent and inspiring creative content, online and in person.
